Vincent van Gogh - letter to Theo, 21 Jan 1882
(Thanks to his brother Theo over 700 of van Gogh’s letters remain.)
van Gogh moved to The Hague in Jan 82 after having a falling out with his parents and removing himself from their home. In The Hague he rented a studio and continued his studies of drawing and sketching.
Soon after the move van Gogh became involved with an unmarried woman, Sien, who had one young child and another on the way. This involvement earned him a stay in the venereal-disease ward and alienated him from his more respectable companions. He nonetheless briefly considered marrying her, however Theo convinced him otherwise.[f]
